About the BSA

Established in 1943 to ensure the provision of ethical and efficient legal services to the community, we are now the largest local association of solicitors in Northern Ireland.

In its long history, the BSA has consistently represented its members’ interests, lobbying government, promoting the highest standards of legal practice and organising a varied social and Continuing Professional Development programme.

We provide an independent lobbying support to ensure that legal issues and challenges are debated in an informed and fair way so that in turn, members of the public can be confident that their solicitors are representing their needs and promoting access to justice and fair representation.

The BSA prides itself on its keen sense of social responsibility and has acted as a staunch defender of the most vulnerable sections of society.

Sarah Wilson The BSA places charitable work at the centre of our organisation. We have supported various local charities in recent years, including NSPCC, NI Hospice, Action Cancer, Marie Curie, Helping Hand and The Welcome Organisation.

John O’Kelly has been elected Chair of the Belfast Solicitors’ Association for 2026. Marking the beginning of his term, he said:

“It is a great honour to take up the role of Chair of the Belfast Solicitors’ Association in 2026. I am proud to lead the Association in the year ahead and to continue its long tradition of supporting both our members and the wider community. I look forward to the events planned throughout the year and to championing our chosen charity.”

For 2026, the BSA has selected WAVE Trauma Centre as its nominated charity. WAVE provides vital support to individuals and families affected by the Troubles and other trauma, offering care, advocacy, and services that promote healing and resilience.

The BSA, together with its valued partners, looks forward to engaging in fundraising activities throughout the year to support the essential work carried out by WAVE Trauma Centre. Information about WAVE can be accessed here Victims & Survivors Support | Wave Trauma Centre | Northern Ireland
